Handgun Safes

A handgun safe keeps a pistol locked up and still within reach. On the nightstand, a closet shelf or in a vehicle console, a good quick-access box opens in seconds for its owner and stays shut for everyone else.

Quick-access checklist

Handgun safe checklist: entry, steel, mounting and size
  • Entry: biometric or keypad, with a backup key stored somewhere else.
  • Steel: thicker steel and a lid that resists prying.
  • Mounting: pre-drilled holes for a bolt-down, or a security cable for a vehicle.
  • Size: room for the pistol with a weapon light, plus a spare magazine.

Choosing the lock

Biometric readers are the fastest one-hand option; enroll several fingers from both hands. Keypads are proven and work with gloves. Whatever the lock, practice opening it in the dark until it is second nature.

Where to keep it

Mount a bedside safe to the nightstand or bed frame so it cannot walk away. In a vehicle, use a console safe or a box with a steel cable, and check the storage laws for each state on the route. Pair the safe with the right handgun from Pistol Buyers Guide.com.
